Proofreading is the process of correcting typographical errors, formatting, spelling, punctuation, non-standard grammar, incorrect numbering or math, and spacing/positioning of lines and characters. When a document is proofread the original text/copy is usually compared to the new typeset text/copy.
Proofreading is not editing a document. Editing the document is the process of correcting grammatical errors, inconsistencies, and editorial style. When a document is edited the editor uses only the draft document.
Tips for Proofreading a Document:
- Mark errors in the body text and in the nearest margin.
- Use slash marks ( / ) to separate corrections in the margin, making notes referring to left to right movement through the body text correction marks.
- Write clearly and legibly in red pen.
- Place a ring around notes that instruct changes but are not to be typeset themselves, in the margin.
